E20 petrol is a fuel
blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, now mandatory across India from
April 1, 2026. It has a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95, aimed at
reducing crude oil imports, cutting vehicular emissions, and supporting farmers
by boosting ethanol demand.
What is E20 Petrol?
- Composition:
20% ethanol + 80% petrol.
- Octane Rating:
Minimum RON 95 (higher resistance to knocking).
- Purpose:
- Reduce India’s dependence on
imported crude oil.
- Lower carbon emissions.
- Provide a market for ethanol
produced from sugarcane and other crops.
Rollout in India
- Mandatory Nationwide:
From April 1, 2026, all petrol pumps across India sell E20 as the
standard grade.
- Gradual Introduction:
First introduced at select outlets in 2023, expanded nationwide in 2026.
- Future Plans:
Government already discussing E25 fuel (25% ethanol blend) with
auto manufacturers.
Vehicle Compatibility
- Modern Vehicles:
Most new cars and two-wheelers launched in the past few years are E20-compatible.
- Older Vehicles:
May face issues such as:
- Slight drop in mileage.
- Possible wear on rubber/plastic fuel
system components.
- Need for periodic checks if not
designed for ethanol blends.
